Netflix's new teen thriller series The Society picks up that often-used story prompt: what happens if all the adults vanish and the kids are left to their own devices? Here the kids are a few dozen impossibly pretty high schoolers, who are forced to form their own self-governing community after all the adults in their small US town inexplicably disappear. Returning from a camping trip, the group discover their parents are gone and all the town’s exit routes blocked, with what appears to be dense, impenetrable woodland suddenly keeping them barricaded inside. There is electricity but no internet access, an odd smell that comes and goes, as well as a mysteriously unscheduled solar eclipse. And the hands of fate, as demonstrated in a repeated coin toss to determine the group’s new leader, appears almost supernaturally predetermined. It is strange, intriguing and, at first frustratingly, all entirely inconsequential. The Society only works when you come to realise it has little interest in the specifics of what has actually happened to all of the show’s adults. okay, tbh I am eagerly waiting for the next season.
